Joe Hewit has posted an interesting comment about how he’d like to see applications completely disappear, replaced by an operating system coupled with pieces of functionality from different vendors that all work together.

Apple got there first in 1996 with OpenDoc. It was ambitious, technically very well done, and it almost worked. I once used a beta OpenDoc system for a few hours - it was really neat, if a little slow on the hardware of the time (120MHz processors).

There is some good information around if you go looking for it
