Like many developers, I’ve spent my share of time working with a Profiler, working to make a system faster.

Frans Bouma has a great post on the subject, How to find and fix performance problems in ORM powered applications.

While the specific advice he gives is focussed on improving ORM performance, the “isolate, analyze, interpret and fix” sequence he describes is spot on for any context. Good advice - go read it.
